Title: Radio Friendly Part 9 of 10: Instead of a Sweet
Pairing: American Idol: Blake Lewis/Chris Richardson
Rating: PG
Summary: In which years go by.
Length: 600 words
Disclaimer: People sort of own themselves, don't they? Which means this is a work of fiction.
Notes: Radio Friendly is an AU set in 1962, when New York was the center of pop music and the Brill Building was where it all happened, when a group of talented songwriters and producers crafted perfect pop hits for artists whose every move was controlled by their label. Pictures and songs will be used along the way to take you back to yesteryear—and for those who'd like more info, see the additional author's note at the bottom.
You're reading this story because [livejournal.com profile] lillijulianne was so enthusiastic and [livejournal.com profile] allysonsedai insisted that it see the light of day, because they were willing to keep reading even when I sent three chapters in one weekend, and were instrumental in the flow, in pointing out what it needed and what it didn't, and in holding my hand through the entire thing. Thank you, ladies!

1: Come to Where the Flavor Is | 2: Where Particular People Congregate | 3: This Is the One They'll Have to Beat | 4: You've Come a Long Way, Baby | 5: Alive with Pleasure | 6: It's What's Upfront That Counts | 7: We'd Rather Fight Than Switch | Missing Scene: Ryan and Simon | 8: So Round So Firm So Fully Packed | Missing Scene: Chris and Blake

These amazing graphics were created by [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose, whom I cannot thank enough.

instead of a sweet

Additional Scene: One Big Circle
10: I'd Walk a Mile. Includes dogs and video messages!

Notes: Our cast of characters:
Ryan Seacrest is based partly on his own sweet self, partly on Dick Clark (who really was one of the first to play the Beatles), partly on his mentor Merv Griffin (the game show stuff) and partly on label owner/movie exec David Geffen (who has raised tons of money for AIDS charities).
Simon Cowell is mostly himself, with elements of Don Kirshner and Phil Spector.
Randy Jackson isn't much in evidence, but really is mostly based on himself.
Paula Abdul Cowell is mostly herself as well, but I was also thinking of Eartha Kitt as well as Mica Ertegun, widow of Ahmet Ertegun and one of the top interior designers of the past century.
The Kittens really are any girl group you want.
Kat McPhee is very slightly based on Diana Ross, but only if you squint.
Gina Glocksen is based somewhat on Ronnie Spector and somewhat on Joan Jett, but would have been recording around the same time as Heart.
Kelly Clarkson is based on Carole King, and there's a joke in there if you want to find it.
Chris Daughtry, naturally, is based on Gerry Goffin.
Elliott Yamin is based partially on Arif Mardin
As for our heroes, they weren't based on any particular pop songwriting team, but there are clues enough in the last part, this and the next one for you to guess which Broadway songwriting team they're based on. More on that in the next chapter!

I love how much research you've done - now I'm curious about who the boys were inspired on! This chapter is brilliant, much like 5 was incredibly original. The idea was great, although Ryan at 52 is a scary image! LOL

Only one more? :(

Okay, I know I'm a fangirl, but I think Ryan is going to age really well. I have a firm idea in my head of the portrait that would accompany that article and it's him with just more gray and a few crinkles at the corners of his eyes and mouth. He certainly looks better now than he did say, the first season of Idol six years ago.

I am so pleased that you liked this chapter! Thank you so much for your comment!

*bows* I am amazed at your creative presentation. I didn't expect you to use newspaper clippings to express your thoughts for this chapter. Marvelous, especially since I am in Comm Studies in college, so I heart newspapers. :p I am so happy for Ryan, since Simon is finally doing something for him. And of course, lovely Cake. Too smart of them to venture into writing musical scores. I would be interested if they do that in this modern century though. Just imagine 2080s musical lol.

I adore newspapers and magazines too! And yeah, good old Rymon.

I don't know, with Duncan Sheik going from writing pop songs to winning a Tony this year, I bet there will be people moving in that same direction.

Thank you so much!

ok, i'm commenting via blackberry so this has to be brief (i'll comment for real later) but i wanted to tell you that i literally just sat and read this entire story to date, on my phone, in the parking lot of the grocery store. i was just looking for something to read while i finished my cigarette so i started chapter 1, and now here i am. i absolutely love it and i'm incredibly impressed by all the time and research that must have gone into this. and i love all the notes at the end - who knew slash fanfic could be so educational? srsly - LOVE!

This is the best comment ever! :)

Clio - I'm reading this on my phone as well but it looks *awesome*. Can't wait until I get home so I can see it for real!

Allyson's right; this IS one of the best comments ever! I'm so flattered, it's like being a really good story on NPR! I can't even—wow! Thank you so much for letting me know! I'm so pleased you like the story!

Oh oh oh!!! I'm so bummed that the last chapter is coming up. :(

This is brilliant. I love how this entire story has been multimedia, btw, I forgot to mention that in my last comment.

I literally gasped when I read about Sligh. D: I feel so bad for Phil.

GALEY!!! XD

I also am happy about Elliott. :)

Oh man, Speezy as Scheherezade? I want that now. And hmm, the only songwriting teams I can think of that may apply are Rodgers & Hammerstein and Livingston & Evans. Orrrrrrrrr Romanovsky & Phillips. Which would make my life. ;)

And oh! Ryan bb! "Because he walked out of the closet on his own terms." Amen. Yes. This is good. \o/

I admit, the VF thing is like, Clio's love letter to Ryan. I adore the VF Hall of Fame; it's one of my favorite magazine pieces and I crib its style all the damn time. And I can see him in my head at 52, too, and he is totally still adorable!

hahah, now that you know who the songwriting team is, you'll have to tell me what you think!

Thanks, I'm so glad you like it!

Wow! You just covered 20+ years in a single fic chapter in a really unique way! Great idea to present the tidbits of their lives in newspaper clippings. Almost everyone seems to be so successful. Another favourite chapter for me, due to the presentation :)

I just saw that this is chapter 9/10. Only one more? Noooooooooo :(

Kudos to [Bad username or site: ali_wildgoose, @ livejournal.com], the graphics are fantastic.

You have such a creative mind. This was such an interesting way to tell your story.

Simon/Paula - Awww... so sweet that he wants to take care of her still.

Sligh. Man, I know not everything can be happy, but that was sad.

Kelly Clarkson divorces Daughtry for Bo Bice - Hee! &hearts it.

Gina Glocksen Rocks! \m/

I think Elliot / Kat and the reclaiming of her DIVA THRONE! is my favorite. I am so glad Elliot was able to get his Kat.

The team of LEWIS / RICHARDSON FTW! I love that they write musicals together and Jordin is their muse.

Finally, Ryan "gosh darn adorable", yes, yes he is.

Gina Glocksen is based somewhat on Ronnie Spector and somewhat on Joan Jett, but would have been recording around the same time as Heart.

so she wrote "magic man" about blake? then, of course, had a big hit in the 80s with "alone," later a favorite of american idol contestants....:)

you know how much i love this and the graphics are AMAZING. the ryan one just makes me so wistful.

Date: 2007-10-13 01:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com
I would hope that all that 80s stuff that happened to Ann (all that hiding behind cabinets in the videos) didn't happen to Gina, never mind that most of those songs were NOT written by them and were crap. But maybe "Magic Man" is actually about Haley …

I wonder what Blake's take on Heart is. After all, they're hometown gals and were/are looked up to by a lot of that grunge crowd who seem to always go over to their house and stay up late at night jamming.

eta: that Ryan one is just a big gushy love letter. wistful, yeah—I hope he can come out under his own terms, at some point.

Dude. Awesome. Just...awesome.

The graphics are quite well-done, [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose is v. good.

And the content! Some of it I saw coming, some I really, really didn't. (I literally squealed for Elliott, though, and I try not to be too much of a squealer.)
