the_water_clock: abstract painting (Untitled 1953)
Welcome to The Water Clock, the writing journal for Clio ([personal profile] jlh). All of my writing is collected of here regardless of fandom. I'll also be putting up the odd soundtrack and story commentary.

The best way to find what you're looking for is to use the tags:
  • [canon] tags indicate what canon the work is based on, and what "universe."

  • [pairing] tags note which couple is the focus of the story. As I write primarily comic romance, nearly all my stories have at least one pairing.
  • [story] tags are for chaptered stories longer than 10,000 words. All other stories are one-shots.

On Warnings: I believe in warnings akin to Archive of Our Own, that is: major character death, graphic depictions of violence, rape/non-con, and underage. I don't write stories with major character death, graphic depictions of violence, or rape/non-con. The two stories I've written with underage (that is, under 16) sexuality have warnings. I have also put a note on one story that contains minor character death. Any other stories do not require warnings but if you feel differently, please don't hesitate to send me an email.

Blanket permission: You do not need to ask my permission to remix, podfic, translate, create art for or create any secondary fanwork of any fanwork I have posted. Anything you produce in turn should feature a link back to my work and credit me by name, and you should also share the link to your work with me! It will serve two purposes: keep me abreast/informed, and make me really happy. I'd absolutely love to know about it.

Thanks, and let me know what you think!

Title: Your Soul on a Plate
Pairing: Scott McCall/Allison Argent
Rating: PG
Summary: Scott and Stiles have been cooking together forever so of course they'd be competing in the same season—but there's also this girl with dimples. Allison never had chef friend until Lydia found her, seconds after arriving at the competition—but there's also this boy with brown eyes.
(A Top Chef AU.)
Length: 10,000 words
Notes: Thank you as always for these reality competition AUs to [personal profile] honestys_easy for the brainstorming and the beta and the general cheerleading. I swear, I came up with the idea for the next Top Chef to be in Boston before I knew they were actually filming there this summer.
(Of course the dorm challenge wouldn't be at the ol' alma mater—they haven't let anyone film there since Love Story—but I couldn't resist.)

Title: Quadratic Functions
Pairing: Derek Hale/Lydia Martin/Erica Reyes/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: NC-17
Summary: It started because when they asked Stiles what he wanted for his birthday he said, "Sex." Which, being cash-strapped students, was something they could give him. Planning for the rest of their birthdays, though—that took a little more doing. (But it was still sex. Sex all the way down.)
Warning: Dirty talk, if you're not into that.
Length: 22,000 words
Notes: In the same college AU OT4 as Completing the Square. The first two chapters are based on prompts from [profile] nightreveals, [personal profile] aliassmith and [personal profile] radioaches; the third is an idea from my tumblr fic Inches on the Reel to Reel; the fourth is all Beyoncé's fault. The biggest thanks go to pinetreekate, who helped immensely in getting this to look like a story and not a series of things that happened one time, and for getting me past some last-minute concerns.

We should do this every time )

Title: The Maternal Instincts of Betas
Pairing: Teen Wolf: Scott McCall/Allison Argent
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Scott expected to go through junior year alpha-omega claiming as an observer and maybe find his mate later in life, like most betas. Then he met Allison, and it wasn't just his love life that changed, but his whole future.
Warning: (skip) A/B/O verse. Mentions of past and future mpreg.

Length: 18,000 words
Notes: Like rest of this mini-verse, this is grade-A Romantic Fantasy Sugar that presents instinctive mating-for-life at seventeen (or so) as entirely unproblematic. There's a lot of overt mutual consent going on, but I know some people feel that mating as a concept is always already dub-con, so note that this really is an omegaverse story, including preset roles from birth, a biological imperative for mating (heat or rut) and biological differences between alphas and omegas, and all of those are present in the story as well as the mating-for-life and the tentacle-like ovipositor. There isn't any actual mpreg on the page, but there are mentions of past mpreg (the sheriff) and future mpreg (Scott and Stiles). And as will become clear in this story, betas in this mini-verse aren't just "regular" humans, but a blend of intersex and pansexual, and there are fewer of them than alphas and omegas.
Thank you pinetreekate for the incredible beta and for holding my hand when I realized this story was going to be much longer and more involved than I had anticpated.
This is the final story in the Claiming is Confusing 'verse, and closing the 'verse is bittersweet, like all endings. Thanks to the mods at the a/b/o ladies challenge for giving me a place to think about omegaverse femslash, which led to everything else; to the the Wincon'12 femslash panel for the idea of the ovipositor for alpha and beta females being tentacle-like; to Kaister for commenting in the Derek story that I should write one about Scott and Allison; to all of you who offered help and support along the way; and to everyone who has read the stories in this 'verse. The response has been amazing, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I just want to make it easier for other kids )

Title: The Willow Turns Her Back
Pairing: Pansy Parkinson/Millicent Bulstrode
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Pansy has a plan for losing her virginity that involves Draco Malfoy, but the oncoming war puts an end to that. Well, wars are stupid anyway. And there's always Millie.
Warning: (Note: this is not a spoiler if you've read EWFS and Trick is to Keep Breathing and know who dies in those stories. Both are offscreen deaths in this story as well.) (skip) Character deaths, both off-screen, first Narcissa, later Millicent.
Length: 4900 words
Notes: This is more post-GoF AU based on the events of Eight Ways From Sunday, though this story should be fairly well self-contained. A companion of sorts to With One Breath.
Thanks as always to Heidi and Verity for the encouragement!

Title: You Make Me Live
Pairing: Gen friendship Stiles&Scott&Lydia&Allison
Rating: PG
Summary: Scott, Lydia, Allison and Stiles spend a week at a cabin by a lake in the woods and nothing freaky happens. Maybe this is just the difference between high school and college. That, and all the missing each other like crazy stuff.
Length: 1800 words
Notes: Chock full of BFF feels. Written for verity for GENuary, and therefore a smidge late! There are blink and you'll miss it references to Scott/Allison, Stiles/Derek and Lydia/Erica (neither Derek nor Erica are in the story) in case that spoils your gen. In the same timeline as the baking & waiting, dancing & hiking and distract series, so not really AU except for the Erica not being dead part.

Title: A Saucer of Milk
Pairing: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Melinda May (gen)
Rating: PG
Summary: Melinda remembers when Maria Hill and Jemma Simmons first came to S.H.I.E.L.D. She was there when Coulson and Barton brought Natasha Romanov in from the cold. But Coulson's latest stray is nothing like those women, and Melinda isn't sure that's such a good thing.

Title: Pulling on All Your Threads
Pairing: Lydia Martin/Erica Reyes
Rating: PG
Summary: Lydia has no doubt in her mind that she's going to win this design competition. She just needs to keep from being distracted by one of her competitors. Not that Erica's trying to distract her; she wants to win, too. Getting Lydia's attention is just a bonus. (A Project Runway AU)
Warning: No warning necessary.
Length: 8800 words
Notes: THANK YOU a million times to honestys_easy for the encouragement and the suggestions and all of her help. The first two parts were posted back in October for TW Femslash Week; thanks to everyone who read and encouraged me to press on. Now I'm happily posting the entire finished story for the first TW Femslash 4FEMSLASH!

Title: Martin and Reyes
Pairing: Lydia Martin/Erica Reyes (Teen Wolf)
Rating: NC-17
Summary: The Alliance is the first line of defense against vampires and other misbehaving magical creatures, and agent Lydia Martin takes her responsibility very seriously. Erica Reyes, on the other hand, likes to play it fast and loose. But with the return of Deucalion, werewolf turned vampire, and a mole betraying Alliance missions to the vamps, they'll have to find a way to work together (if the rest of their team doesn't knock their heads together first).
Warning: (skip) Canon-typical violence; one character working through post-traumatic stress issues.
Length: 20,000 words
Notes: Written for [profile] teenwolf_bb and you simply must check out the amazing art post! Thanks so much to [personal profile] paynesgrey and the mods at twbb for their patience with my unfinished draft.
[personal profile] radioaches suggested a SHIELD AU, and I'd just seen The Heat, so here we are in supernatural buddy cop land! Thank you to [personal profile] verity for all the encouragement along the way and help with the plotting, [community profile] ali_wildgoose for a key suggestion early on, and [profile] bononoh for the super excellent beta!

Title: Arrives Without a Suitcase
Pairing: Lydia/Erica, Scott/Allison, Stiles/Derek
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Stiles finds himself pregnant with his fourth at the same time his friends Erica, Scott and Allison are all having their first. So of course they not only want his advice, but tell him he should write a guide to pregnancy that doesn't assume all omegas are passive and docile, and remembers that betas can carry children, too. To his surprise, he finds he's up for the challenge.
Length: 23,000 words
Notes: Written for the [community profile] abo_bigbang. Super awesome art by Verity!!!!! Title from the Beatles song "Lady Madonna."
A companion piece to The Migratory Patterns of Omegas, The Mating Rituals of Alphas, and soon-to-be-posted The Maternal Instincts of Betas. This entire mini-verse wouldn't exist without Verity's encouragement and support, so all the thanks go to her and all the blame to me.
Like rest of this mini-verse, this is grade-A Romantic Fantasy Sugar that presents instinctive mating-for-life at seventeen (or so) as entirely unproblematic. There's a lot of overt mutual consent going on, but I know some people feel that mating as a concept is always already dub-con, so note that this really is an omegaverse story, including preset roles from birth, a biological imperative for mating (heat or rut) and biological differences between alphas and omegas, and all of those are present in the story as well as the mating-for-life. Title: Couldn't Have One Without the Other
Pairing: Lydia Martin/Erica Reyes, Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: NC-17 (eventually)
Summary: The little town of Beacon that weathered the Long Winter is growing with the arrival of new teacher Miss Laura Hale, who's come to prepare ambitious students Stiles and Lydia for their upcoming college exams. Miss Hale's brother and sister, Derek and Erica, have also come to town to start a horse ranch. But is it their beautiful horses, or the Hale siblings themselves, who have turned Stiles and Lydia's heads?
Length: 68,000 words
Notes: If the summary doesn't give it away to you, it's a Little House-style AU, suggested by katemonster and verity on tumblr one day. Thanks so much to verity and heidi for beta'ing this beast of a story, and to them, evil_erato and stina for cheerleading me during the writing process!

Title: Kiss Me, I'm a Lycanthrope
Pairing: Teen Wolf: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: PG
Summary: Once Stiles figured out how easy it was to get gifts personalized for werewolves, Derek started drowning in cheap mugs and bumper stickers with little paws on them. Derek was more confused than anything else—at least until that final present.
Length: 1400 words
Notes: So Verity and I were talking about some nsfw art that includes Derek in a "World's #1 Alpha" apron and I started riffing and now here we are. Established relationship fic if that's not clear. Contains a reference to pregnancy left deliberately vague—it's up to you if it's mpreg or a surrogate.

Title: The Chance to Come Through
Pairing: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Rating: PG
Summary: Derek's auditioning because Laura talked him into it, though he's not sure a ballet dancer is really what a televised dance competition is looking for. Stiles is auditioning because it seemed like a fun thing to do with Scott on a Saturday morning, and maybe he'd get to dance with Comfort, his favorite female hip hop dancer. They both end up getting a lot more than they were looking for.
(A So You Think You Can Dance AU.)
Length: 7600 words
Notes: Written for the Teen Wolf Spring Fling, and thanks to everyone organizing that fest. Thanks also to [personal profile] honestys_easy for her help and enthusiasm in working out this AU and giving it the once-over, and the creator of the original photo set that started me thinking about this in the first place.
Also features Derek and Stiles quoting Center Stage at each other (since the quotes are self-conscious they should be easy to spot) as well as a line from the song "Cabaret." Title from "The Music and the Mirror" from A Chorus Line.

Title: Distracting
Pairing: Scott McCall/Allison Argent
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Allison likes a little danger. (Or, why Scott and Allison were in such a rush to leave pack meeting.)
Warning: (skip) Allison and Scott are playing with the idea of Scott being a dangerous creature and Allison ceding control to him, but it's just play—their encounter was fully planned out ahead of time, as becomes clear at the end. That said, Scott is fully wolfed out and playing it up while they're having sex.
Length: 1000 words
Notes: Written for the "consent play" square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card, and suggested by Scott and Allison giggling about bestiality to Stiles. (See notes for more.) Companion fic to Distracted (Stiles/Derek) and Distractions (Lydia/Erica). Thanks so much to [personal profile] verity for the awesome beta!

Pairing: Seamus Finnigan/Dean Thomas

Warning: Some minor pain that comes with waxing off hair, but it's not the point of the story.
Length: 1200 words
Notes: Written for the "waxplay" square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card. Awesomely beta'd by the awesome [personal profile] verity.
