Gosh, thanks so much! This story feels like it came out of the aether because I wrote it so quickly; I think the real trick is to not get in the way of the story.
Re Blake's performance: The bit that I had to think most about was where to put Blake, musically, in a time before hip hop. Chris you can plunk down anyplace in the rock era and he's still a green-eyed soul singer with a rock edge, but Blake … In the end I decided that making your voice sound like a saxophone wasn't far from making it sound like a drum, so vocalese fills in for beat boxing, which led to Blake listening to similarly unstructured jazz rather than trip-hop. Needless to say, when Blake said in an interview that he was more into jazz and Chris more into R&B I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
Anyway, early 60s jazz is pretty fantastic, with Coltrane and Miles and all of that. I highly recommend it!
