The Cake thing I'm writing now is an AU, so really you only need to have a sense of what they look like. It's populated with piles of other folks from AI, mostly from this season but also from other seasons, so sure, to get the in jokes you'd have to basically have a familiarity with the last six seasons of Idol, but I'm not sure you have to in order to read it since it IS an AU—Heidi seems to like it just because it has a setting she really likes. It doesn't draw from real things that happened to Chris and Blake so much as from their personalities and the personalities of the other Idols and the judges/Ryan.
